Simplified Oven Baked Suppli Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup white rice
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup pasta sauce
- 1 teaspoon bouillon granules (chicken or vegetable)
- 2 teaspoons dried basil, divided
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 egg
- 3 sticks mozzarella string cheese
Instructions
- Place rice, water, pasta sauce, bouillon, and 1 teaspoon of basil in a medium pot. Stir gently to combine.
- Cook on medium until water has evaporated, stirring frequently so the rice doesn't stick to the bottom.
- Remove from heat and spread on a plate to cool quickly. Alternatively, the rice mixture can be refrigerated overnight.
- When rice has cooled, cut cheese sticks in half the short way, and then cut each piece in half again the long way.
- Wet your hands- or use gloves! Scoop about 1/4 cup of rice mixture into the palm of your hand. Press flat. Place a piece of cheese in the center and fold the rice around the cheese. Press firmly to form into an oblong stick shape. Set aside until all the rice is formed.
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Place bread crumbs, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and remaining 1 teaspoon of basil in a small bowl and mix together.
- Break egg into another small bowl and whisk until uniform in color.
- Spray a baking sheet with non-stick pan spray.
- Dip each piece of suppli in the egg mixture to coat and roll in the breadcrumbs until fully covered. Place on baking sheet. Spray the top of each piece of suppli with the oil spray.
- Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until the tops start to brown slightly.
Suppli may seem like it's a complicated dish, but it's actually not so bad to make. Just take it one step at a time- mix, roll, coat, and bake and you've got yourself an easy, healthy dinner that's perfect for any night of the week- or any day of the year, really!
